Occupational Therapy for Everyday Life

Occupational therapy looks at the things you need and want to do—and what may be getting in the way.

At Lockhart OT, I work with children and adults to understand where everyday life is breaking down and identify practical changes that fit the person, the task, and the environment.

Sometimes that means changing a routine. Sometimes it means adapting the environment, reducing sensory or executive-function demands, or finding a different way to approach a task. And sometimes it means taking recommendations you already have and figuring out how to make them actually work in your life.

You don't have to know exactly what category of OT you need before you call.

Individual Occupational Therapy

For children and adults who are capable in many areas of life but find that certain routines, tasks, environments, or transitions take far more effort than they feel like they should.

This may look like...

  • Starting routines but struggling to maintain them

  • Feeling overwhelmed by clutter, organization, or everyday household tasks

  • Difficulty getting started, shifting gears, or following through

  • Sensory experiences that make ordinary activities unexpectedly difficult

  • Using so much energy getting through work or school that little is left for life at home

  • Knowing which strategies should help but finding they don’t work in real life

  • A child who manages well in one environment but struggles significantly in another

  • Everyday activities taking more time, energy, planning, or recovery than seems reasonable

What working together may look like

We’ll look at what is actually happening—not just what is supposed to happen. That may include your routines, environment, sensory experience, transitions, demands, available capacity, and strategies you’ve already tried.

From there, we identify where the friction is and experiment with practical changes. The goal isn’t to create a perfect system. It’s to find approaches that make everyday life work better for you.

Curiosity first. Practical changes second.

Family & Education Support

Children don’t function in isolation. What works at school may not work at home—and what looks manageable in one environment can be very different in another.

I help families understand what may be contributing to those differences and develop practical ways to support a child within the routines and environments where challenges are actually occurring.

For Families

Support may include:

  • Understanding difficult after-school or evening routines

  • Sensory and self-regulation challenges

  • Transitions and daily routines

  • Dressing, hygiene, meals, sleep routines, and other everyday activities

  • Executive-function and organizational challenges

  • Identifying environmental changes that may reduce demands

  • Helping strategies fit the capacity of both the child and the family

  • Making sense of recommendations from school or other providers and translating them into home life

For Schools & Educational Teams

Independent consultation may include:

  • Functional observation

  • Review of educational records and existing evaluations

  • Classroom and school-environment consultation

  • Functional evaluation

  • Consultation with parents, educators, and educational teams

  • Helping teams understand how sensory, motor, environmental, or executive-function factors may affect school participation

  • Practical recommendations that can be incorporated into the student’s educational environment

The question isn't simply, "Can they do it?"
It's "What does it take for them to do it?"

How Services Work

Support is individualized. The type, location, and frequency of services depend on

what we're trying to understand or accomplish together.

Start With a Conversation

A complimentary 15-minute phone call gives us a chance to briefly discuss what’s going on and determine whether Lockhart OT may be a good fit.

Meet Where Life Happens

Individual services may take place in your home or virtually, depending on your needs and what we’re working on. School and professional consultation may also take place in the relevant environment.

The Right Amount of Support

More therapy isn’t always better. Follow-up may be weekly for a period of time, occasional, or simply as needed. The goal is to provide enough support to create meaningful change—not to create dependence on ongoing services.

In-home services: Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield & Zionsville
Virtual services: Clients located in Indiana
